Bernadine Roslyn ~ 1948 - 2023

ROSLYN, Bernadine – died suddenly at the Ottawa Heart Institute on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at the age of 75 years. Bernadine came to the valley in the early 70s as part of the “back-to-the-land” movement. Like so many others she sought a better place to raise children and live in harmony with nature. The early years were about survival and subsistence farming but as the 70s turned into the 80s Bernadine found a way to make her love of computers and technology work with her ideals instead of against them.

A consummate geek, she started her first computer business, Roslyn Data Systems, in 1986 and watched it evolve over the next 4 decades. First, Roslyn & Huestis Computer Centre; then Village Computer Centre, Bayberry Lane Designs and finally Valley Web Studio and the site you are reading now; AlgonquinEast.com. Bernadine felt strongly that there should be a centralized source for information about the area she called home and set about rectifying that with AlgonquinEast.com. While her daughters agree with her in that regard, neither one of them has the time or energy to carry on the project. If you, or anyone you know would be interested in taking over this site, please email Berns2kids (at) gmail.com,

Bernadine was passionate about volunteering and pioneering change. If she saw a need she sought to fill it and and as such was involved with numerous causes, organizations, and groups; Community Resource Centre (CRC) in Killaloe and Toy Bus, The Killaloe Craft and Community Fair, Railway Station Park in Barry’s Bay and innumerable Business Development committees. Bernadine’s most recent passion was Green Burial Ottawa Valley. If you have enjoyed AlgonquinEast.com and want to honour Bernadine’s efforts and memory, donations to Green Burial Ottawa Valley in her name are gladly accepted.
